M3GAN is currently killing it at the domestic box office, having blown way past last week’s predictions to take second place, paving the way for an unrated gorier cut to possibly be released in the future. Screenwriter Akela Cooper revealed that the film originally had a much “gorier” tone and featured the killer doll racking up a higher body count compared to the murder spree shown on the big screen.

“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point,” Cooper said to the Los Angeles Times. “I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”

Cooper added that while M3GAN’s final body count wasn’t a “scale massacre,” she “did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters” that producer James Wan wanted to see survive to the AI companion’s rampage. Universal had originally wanted to wait for a gory horror movie to be released and become a box office hit, but Cooper said that M3GAN was greenlit and its more “fun” horror elements were kept intact, allowing it to lead a charge for a new generation of original and blood-soaked horror movies.
